What to Do When Your Champion Changes Roles

A champion’s departure can remove context and momentum in one day. The opportunity may still exist, but the new owner must be able to judge it afresh.

Read the signal

Avoid assuming that internal support transfers automatically. The remaining team may not share the old champion’s problem definition or urgency. An abrupt attempt to restart the close can look self-serving.

Make the next move

Ask the departing contact, if appropriate, who owns the initiative now. Send the new owner a neutral account of the problem, prior evaluation, open questions, and commitments, with no claim that approval was inevitable. Offer a short reset conversation.

Language you can adapt

Illustrative wording:

We worked with your former colleague on the intake process. We had tested the workflow but had not completed the security review. Is this still an active priority for your team?

The wording is a starting point. Replace the problem, evidence, and request with details the buyer actually gave you. If those details are missing, ask a question before sending a polished message. Specificity makes it easier for the buyer to correct your understanding and easier for you to see whether the opportunity is moving.

Decide what happens next

If the new owner confirms the project, rebuild the decision map together. If no one owns it, remove the deal from the active pipeline until sponsorship returns.

Write the result in your deal notes as an observable fact: who responded, what they agreed to do, and when. A friendly reply is useful, but a decision, a named owner, or a scheduled review tells you more. If the next step remains vague, treat that as information about the deal rather than a reason to send the same follow-up again.

Use these examples responsibly. Describe your product, pricing, and customer results accurately, and adapt every suggestion to the buyer’s stated process.
